Silicon..
Hi all, I buildt a cave from ceramic slates for my catfish, gluing the pieces together with silicon. I used casco transparent glass silicon, it has the number 2985 on it. It says on the tube it's meant for aquariums. However, I'm a bit concerned becuase now after 24 hours I can still smell the silicon, a rather unpleasant odour. I'm reluctant to put my piece of art into the fishtank becuase of this smell :P Have I used a potentially dangerous silicon? should I wait longer than the 24 hours it says on the package? Nina |

If you can smell it, then it has not finished curing yet and should not be placed into your tank as it _may_ poison the fish. |

Nina It'll be ok, you wont' smell it when it's underwater.. hahaha... jk... but seriously, leaving it out for 24-48hrs to 'cure' is recommended. After that, you can rinse it off and throw it on in the aquarium and it'll be fine. realize that thicker portions of the silicone may take longer to cure... but the smell will be there for months if you wanted to wait for it to leave... it's ok to put in the tank after it's cured. -- RedForeman ©® future fabricator and creator of a ratbike streetfighter!!! ========================== 2003 TRX450ES 1992 TRX-350 XX (For Sale) 1987 TRX250R (sold) 1987 CBR600 Hurricane (sold) 1987 VFR700 Interceptor (sold) 1995 TRX300ex (sold) 2000 CBR600F4 silver/red (sold) *sniff*sniff* '98 Tacoma Ext Cab 4X4 Lifted.... ========================== ø¤°`°¤ø,¸¸¸,ø¤°`°¤ø,¸¸¸,ø¤°`°¤ø,¸¸,ø¤°`°¤ø,¸¸¸,ø¤° `°¤ø,¸¸,ø¤°`°¤ø "By US Code Title 47, Sec.227(a)(2)(B), a computer/modem/printer meets the definition of a telephone fax machine. When I've used silicon for aquarium projects, I've generally had to wait several days for the smell to fade. Heck, the new ten gallon tank I bought this weekend smells very strongly yet. Fresh off the assembly line, I guess. Give it some more time, it will clear up. -- www.ericschreiber.com |

I've never smelled the silicone in aquariums, so the smell does go away pretty quickly (unless all the aquariums that are sold are put in storage for months until the smell goes away). I'd give it a couple more days to cure, especially if you used thick patches of glue. Then if it still smells maybe soak it in water for a few more days changing the water daily. I got that line, but I was simply recommending a somewhat more cautions method (ie: if it still smells after 48 hours, leave it for another 48, or maybe 96, then if it still smells, let it soak in water, not just wash). I didn't mean to come across rude in any way, form, or shape. :) Harry -----= Posted via Newsfeeds.Com, Uncensored Usenet News =----- http://www.newsfeeds.com - The #1 Newsgroup Service in the World! -----== Over 100,000 Newsgroups - 19 Different Servers! =----- |

That's fine, normal silicon contains a mould resistant agent that will kill any bacteria and therefore is not suitable for fishtanks, but people have gotten away with making tankt from them for years though. However, I'm a bit concerned becuase now after 24 hours I can still smell the silicon, a rather unpleasant odour. Depending on the thickness of the silicon it can take days even weeks for the silicon to fully harden but normally it should be just fine after 24-48 hours. The smell that comes from true silicon os actually acetic acid (CH3COOH, pKa = 4.76) and could potentially lower the pH in your tank but for the small amounts normally used I wouldnt worry to much... The smell can take a few weeks to go away depending on the thickness of the silicon applied and temperature, I usually wait 3-5 days after I do silicon woak on my tanks before putting the fish / water back in just to be on the safe side. /Morten --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free.
