Like rroberts777, I like the clown loaches the best, and they seem to do a better job than any of the others. You should get at least 2 or 3 as they love to be with their own kind. They will however out grow your tank, but most any pet shop will gladly trade your larger clown loaches in of a few smaller ones. They grow slow, so it's not like you will have to trade them in every time you turn around... algae eater... I wouldn't get them untill you start to see algae. A dwarf pleco is great for eating the algae from the glass. Ottos do a great job on plants and things, but are a little touchy moving from the stores tank to your tank. TDS (total dissolved solids) between the tanks have to be within 25% of eachother, or they die. I like Red Ramshorns Snails - they bury themselves by day and do their work on algaes at night. They also clean-up uneaten foods and keep the gravel well turned. Red Ramshorns Snails eat hair algae and blueish-green slime algaes, that the so called 'algae eaters' won't touch............ Frank |

news:vTD1g.8226$Qz.6576@fed1read11... Hi: I need a recommendation for a good snail eater for a 30 gals tropical tank (tetras, guppies, rasboras), thanks. Claudio http://cleiva.no-ip.com (Powered By NetBSD for Cobalt) I have 4 Skunk botia in a 20 gallon long tank, 3 in a 10 gallon tank, and 2 YoYo loaches in a 20-gallon long tank. All are community tanks (cory cats, small tetras, oto cats, etc. - the 10 gal. only has otos + 1 female Betta) and a few snails remain but I think those are feed stock managed by the Skunks & YoYos. :) My 30 gallon long has 3 Kuhli loaches which are terminally cute, but do zip about the snails. I'd go for the Skunks or YoYos. They stay small enough for a 10-30 gallon tank and do a good job of managing snails. The YoYos are very active but don't appear to bother the other fish. My largest YoYo is about 3.5". The Skunks max out at about 2.5" Both Skunk botia and YoYo loaches love places to hide. You can use cave decorations, or even PVC pipe (preferred by my YoYos). Gail |

Hi: I need a recommendation for a good snail eater for a 30 gals tropical tank (tetras, guppies, rasboras), thanks. I have a pygmy (or chained) loach in my 15 gallon tank. They stay small, look really cute, and do a reasonable job on snails. If you have room, get a couple as they prefer to have buddies. -- Put the word aquaria in the subject to email me. They're pretty small, which is nice, but how big a snail can a three inch fish manage? I'd love to find some snail eaters, but I don't want anything as big as clowns. -- Mister Gardener |

I pick the few out that grow beyond what he considers food. He took longer than clowns, but my tank is ramshorn-free, and the MTS seem under control. -- Put the word aquaria in the subject to email me. Did you read the FAQ? http://faq.thekrib.com |
