Another Goldfish "sudden death" :(

I fed them this morning and all were fine. Nothing looked amiss. I went
back an hour or so later and found an Oranda dead in the plants! No
sickness, no loss of appetite, no fin rot and a scrape showed no parasites.
It died quickly and with no symptoms. I had this fish over a month.

When you did the scrape, did you check the gills? Saprolegnia -
parasitic fungus can show no symptoms, but kills...

Was it in the same tank that the others died in not to long ago (?)
Reason I asked, it may be a secondary infection rather than a direct
result of the disease. Some bacteria and viruses can remain dormant for
extended periods of time. I know a dormant viruses is referred to as
"virions" - when it comes into contact with the host cell, it becomes
active and then is referred to as a virus. Same thing can happen with
bacteria, but can't think what it's called - getting old does that ya
know... Anyway, if there is any other fish in the tank, I would start a
10 day treatment of a medicated food - I'm sure I would have told you
to do that before as a preventive treatment for secondary infections. I
would also treat the reast of the fish for fungus and parasites -
preventive treatment......... Frank

Yes, the gills were clean. There was nothing unusual to be seen. The fish
looked like it had just died. The other two GF in the tank appear to be
fine. I've had them for about 5 months.

No. This was another tank altogether. I took down that other (quarantine)
tank, cleaned it well and put it up as I didn't need it at the moment
anyway.

Oh damn!!! The things nightmares are made of...... :-( Now I'm worried
about the 2 it was in with.

Thanks Frank. I'm going to do that right now. He was treated with
Quick-Cure while in quarantine. He was fine, active, appeared completely
healthy and seemingly just "dropped dead." I have the Tetra medicated
food. Fish aren't nuts about it but will eat it when really hungry. I think
I'm going to stop adding to my collection for awhile. There have been too
many of these mysterious "sudden deaths" lately for my comfort.

maybe it choked... my oscars look like they are having trouble getting
their mouthful down sometimes - if they just took smaller bites!!

No. There was nothing in it's mouth. Had a bit of something gotten stuck in
it's mouth it would be highly unlikely to have died so quickly. These fish
are like healthy and active one minute, and dead the next.

Got to be bacterial - and killing that quick has to be some type of
Flex. disease............ Frank

They're on antibiotic Tetra food now and I treated then with Quick-Cure.
