Who had the brilliant idea of allowing cross-postings on usenets? What
positive purpose could it possible serve? Seems like it just bogs the
system down...consuming bandwidth.....this is a senseless generation for
sure...Technology abounds and we lack the discipline to use it properly.

Back in the day, USENET was all there was. Gov and University
researchers colaborated accross the earth, they all had diff domains,
cross posting allowed teams to comunicate with one message.

I remember that, as well--although I didn't participate in the newsgroups
then...I'm new at this form of research. .It would only have made sense to
revamp the usenets' programming and addressing domains to curtail the
otherwise abusive behaviors employed today. Thanks for clearing that up for
me....-ED

Then why are you going backwards in technology and ways to use the
internet....Perhaps you would rather have the old BBS systems brought
back instead of images as well..........and then we can always revert
back to the 1200 or lower BPS modems, and old 8087 or Tandy 99
computers.

It made it easier to cover several NGs on the same subject. The person
didn't have to repost the same message on several groups. Now it's used by
trolls to destroy NGs for their own satisfaction.

Seems like it just bogs the
system down...consuming bandwidth.....this is a senseless generation for
sure...Technology abounds and we lack the discipline to use it properly.

ISPs used to do something about abusive posters and off-topic cross-posters
on Usenet. Those days are gone.

Au contraire, mon ami.
Crosspostings are actually a _single_ posting that appears in multiple
groups. Virtually no bandwidth consumes and any decend newsreader will know
not to show you the same message again in another NG.
The real evil postings are multi-postings where the same text is spammed in
individual messages into multiple NGs.

Of course, for spammers and trolls cross-postings are more effective because
people in different NGs jump at each others throats more easily.

I noticed yesterday that my isp home page has added direct access to
the newsgroups via Supernews. They have a click here to learn about
Usenet link, so I clicked, curious about how newbies learn about
newsgroups. The learn about page popped up and it was wall to wall,
ceiling to floor obscenity and hate - I sent my isp an email, asked
them if they've checked their own link lately, got a response in an
hour. They're going to have their tech guys reconfigure in the
morning.

In my newsreader's (slrn) score file I have:

Sco =-9999
Xref: telusplanet.*\C[a-z]:.*\C[a-z]:.*\C[a-z]:.*\C[a-z]:.* *$

This kills crossposts that are posted in over three newsgroups.
Some newsreaders do this automatically.
