So I put my new aquarium together and filled it with water last night.
(I work nights and have Sunday and Monday nights off.) It's looking
pretty bleak with no plants. They should arrive Wednesday, according
to the shipping info on the website where I ordered them (The Pet/
Aquarium Guys). Once I get the plants in I'll start adding fish. I
suppose I should test the water first. What do I need to test for?

Also, I added an air pump, but that sucker is LOUD. It's a "Whisper"
air pump made for a 30-60 gallon aquarium. It's supposed to be
"Extremely Quiet." Man, if that's extremely quiet, what would loud be?!!
Any ideas or suggestions to make it a little quieter? Should I get a
smaller air pump?

I've set air pumps on a soft "kitchen" sponge and used a wire tie or rubber
band to hold it on. The sponges are pretty soft when they are first removed
from the packaging and should quiet any vibrations.

You will want to run a general test to get an idea of the hardness, pH,
and the levels of ammonia, nitItes and nitrAtes. The hardness and pH
are good to keep in mind when selecting fish. The ammonia, nitites and
nitrates are toxic substances to your fish. I don't know if you are
familiar with the 'cycling' process. I will let other people get into
that more if you need more explanation.

Before you go spend more money on an air pump, try setting it on
something else. I had a air pump that was sitting on a wood shelf. The
thing shook itself right up against the cabinet edge and made quite a
raquet. I placed one of those silicon pot holders under it. It is now
much more quiet.

Check to see how you have it set up. It should not make noise.

Possibly your unit is defective or sitting on something else
that is vibrating and making noise.

A good general test is gH (hardness, so if you are at an extreme, you
might want to avoid certain fish), kH (buffer, lets you know how stable
your pH will be) and pH (see if your water tends to be acidic or
alkaline). Test the water after it has aired for a day or two.

After about a week, it will break-in and be at a more representative
sound level. If it is too loud, some have adjustments which lets you
dial the power down. Then there is an assortment of techniques to
isolate them from surfaces, which dampen the mechanical vibrations (but
not the acoustic noise of the pump which is typically much lower).
Whatever you try, make sure you don't block its air intakes, or it will
overheat and expire faster. I don't use air-pumps because I can't be
bothered with their noise and maintenance, but the last ones I had were
suspended inside a cabinet in a cradle of duct tape. Seemed to work well
to isolate the noise. hth

I use Whisper pumps on several of my aquariums and fine them to be very
quiet, at least compared to every other brand I have tried. I suspect
you have had the misfortune of getting a defective unit and I would
exchange it for another one.

The air pump has rubber feet and sits inside the aquarium stand/cabinet.
I'll run it for awhile when I'm at work and see if it quiets down after
some time, as one of you suggested. If it doesn't quiet down, I'll take
it back.

I have a tiny air pump for my 10-gallon aquarium and it doesn't make
much noise at all. It vibrated noisily until I put it on a dry washcloth.
Now I don't even notice it!

The purpose of the air pump, Mister Gardener, is to ensure the water is
well-aerated. I know I probably won't need one, but it makes me feel
good to have one!

I agree G, I had air bubblers in my 5 tanks. I pulled the plug one
night on the 75 gallon tank. I saw no behavior change the next
morning. I was glad to be rid of the noise, but more important, I
was rid of the mineral deposits that are so hard to clean.

I did enjoy the curtain of bubbles and I was convinced that the air
kept the water quality uniform. However, a year later I am glad I
pulled the plug.

I used to have air pumps in all of my tanks...they eventually got
clogged up (they were internal) so now I don't bother....I may restart
them if the summer ever gets up and running here :-( - the main benefit
that I see for them is aerating the water if the temperature gets too
high and natural oxygen levels are depleted.
