Decorating room next door to where tank is kept, emulsion is no problem, but
am concerned about the fumes that may come from the gloss. Painting a door,
window frame and skirting.

I usually turn off the filtration and open the windows for the duration
of the work (if it is brief and the tank is not over loaded). Putting an
airpump outside (ie: driving an airstone or air curtain) provides a
source of 'clean' air, which fills above the waterline, keeping fumes out
by positive pressure. This allows you to keep most filters running
without bad consequences. Check the ingredients/directions on the
renovation products used. The worst (ime) are roofing products. If it
states that all food items in the area need to be put away or covered, or
it's exterior use only, or they warn about inhalation hazards, then there
is concern for your pets.
