Any of you had livestock sucked into your powerhead? I've read about it a
bit and am looking to be proactive.

Any ideas on what I could buy or make to surround the powerhead to prevent
accidents? I have a small Rio800 btw.

Thanks,
B

It all depends on what animals you have...
Standard screen is usually good enough to protect fish.
Problems are with animals having soft bodies like anemones,
slugs - they can find their way into the pump and screen
does not stop them... A pump like Rio 800 will not be easy
to protect. Other pumps, with a regular intake in the form
of a pipe allow you to attach a long strainer and then to
put sponge/foam to further disperse water sucking action...
So as long you do not have new anemones or slugs you should
be all right with your Rio800.

I quit using powerheads many years ago for this reason. I
like to use one big pump to run the whole system including
the protein skimmer.

I had a powerhead in the new tank which I left in there after I bought
the first anemone for it. Big mistake. He was badly damaged and
died, I'd forgotten how common that problem is...

I hear what you say, and it's what I used to do on my larger previous
tanks. This is a 15 gal nano with no sump, which is a new area for
me. Hard to get decent water movement without a little powerhead in
there, you can't really fit the sort of Eheim I'm used to using in
there I'm finding. An airstone behind the reef does quite a bit, but
not perhaps enough for acropora etc that likes movement. The small
tank has presented some interesting new challenges.
