Anyone notice a prob with Blue Rams?
 

Hey there fishy folks.
I was wondering if other hobbyists and store keepers have noticed anything
going on with Blue Rams?
If I can even find them, as MANY shops are passing on them as they "look bad",
and the ones I have seen are pale, some skinny, some just blah (for lack of a
better word).
I had my local PetCo order some for me, and they finally got some in. So
little!
Just babies. Look great and colorful. They've been at the store for only 2 days
now...and I'm still holding off buying any before I can find out if anyone
knows what's going on with them.
Anyone have a clue?
I was planning on adding a young pair to my 75g that houses some Angelfish and
female Bettas, but am leary now of buying any.
(they would have the usual 2 week quarantine, of course.)

Surprisingly, here in South Africa I have recently seen some VERY nice
batches of German Rams, albeit small but strong, colourful and healthy. IME
Rams like a well established tank, heavily planted if you can. Their ideal
conditions supposedly are a neutral ph (a tad on the softer side) kh of 3-6
and very low TDS, although my community tank is a bit above these recomended
levels they still seem to thrive.

I can try and be more specific if there is something more you need to know.
(no slaps in the face this time ;)

Good luck keeping them alive... I've had 3 sets, never looked bad, just
never lasted more then 3 months... all developed popeye, and died... water
conditions were not what they needed, and in the end, it was my fault...

never lasted more then 3 months... all developed popeye, and died...

When I buy Rams (Apisto ramirezi), my staff roll their eyes and say "not
again". Last 3 batches were all the same (and from different suppliers).
They look gorgeous, beautiful coloration, and then they start dropping
like flies over 2-3 weeks. If I'm doing something wrong, I have no clue
what it is. If after a month, there are survivors, then they seem to
live normal lives. I working with a local to breed them for me now. If
it's DOCs, then the next order will go straight to a bare-bottom iso
tank.

I bought a pair of blue rams over 6 month ago....and tehy are doing
great...spawned 4 times...not fry "stage" yet....

Yes it does seem to be luck of the draw with Rams, but as you say if they
survive the initial few weeks then they do pretty well after that! Someone
here mentioned that maybe the acclimatation period should be longer, using
the drip method like the marine guys do it. It's worth a shot cause they
definitely make a wonderful addition to any community tank. Cichlids are
just too cool ;)

I have "Never" been able to keep them! I can't even think of the last
time I saw one in a store even.

My first experience, was short lived... 2 weeks for one, the other made it
to 6 weeks... Popeye, and beginner with Rams... Second time, well
established planted 10g, acclimated better, but probably not significant...
4-5weeks later, one developed popeye, and croaked, followed soon by the
other... all other fish in the tank (cories) were fine....

I love 'em... but I hate 'em.... can't keep them alive for jack.. does it
matter they were from the same guy on aquabid? maybe, not really?
