how much Liverock
 
I have a 70 gal tank i am in the process of setting up a reef tank, how
much live rock would I need?

It depends on the rock, some rock is more dense the other. 1.5 pounds per
gal is norm.

Just figure that the more live rock the better it is, but
the more live rock, the more space it will take up, and
then take a happy medium. And of course the more nooks and
crannies that the rock, has, and the lighter it is the
better. But don't us lava rock :-)

It's not made of calcium, and so does not have the benefit
that calcium based rocks have. Also there is concern that
it could contain heavy metals. My opinion is that most
lava rock is probably mostly silica and any heavy metals
would be bound in the glass, making it difficult to
dissolve out, but one never knows for sure what the exact
composition of a given lava rock is without special
testing. My biggest reason for not using it, is because it
is not made of calcium.
