False and Real SAEs Together

I have a 58G tank with 4 small False SAEs, 8 rasboras and 1 fully grown
Blue Gourami. I would like to add some Real SAEs.Will real SAEs and
false SAEs get along? Also how many real SAEs can I add in this tank
without it being overcrowded or not enough territory for the false and
real SAEs? (I heard real SAEs can get pretty big)?

Thanks

Both of these fish tend to harass similar looking fish to some degree,
especially as adults.

Add one and you risk an aggression imbalance between all of your
established Epalzeorhynchus sp. false fish and a one easy to single out
siamensis.

Add two and you lessen the imbalance between the two fishes but risk
conspecific aggression between the two siamensis later on.

Add three and you may just be overcrowding the tank generally.

Make a judgment based on the kind of aggression you've witnessed in your
tank up till now.

Crossocheilus siamensis can get at least as long as 6", but it depends
entirely on how much it gets to eat while it is a sub-adult. I've had some
that never got anywhere near that large, but we occasionally do get drop-
offs at the store that are at least that large.

I have 17 real SAEs in 3 tanks: 10, 29 and 75. They are great
community tank fish. The closest I have ever seen any show aggression
was to nudge another off a leaf. The nudge was returned. End of
aggression.

I have had them 3 years, their sizes don't vary much. They range from
5 to 6 inches in my tanks.

I have no experience with False SAEs. I believe they have a
reputation for aggressive behavior. However, if the one's you have
are not aggressive, then I would certainly recommend them based on my
experience. I have Clown Loaches in the same tanks and they get along
great, sometimes staying in species other times mingling.

I have one SAE with 2 Clowns in the 10 gallon tank. Again, no
aggression and the SAE often swimming with the Clowns, well with one
of the Clowns, the other is often out of sight.

True SAEs are schooling fish and they are not happy alone. They might start
hurting other fish if they don't have their own species to play with, so
don't buy ONE. Don't get them at all unless you are going to have a group
of them. If everything else is ok, they might do well as a pair but they
prefer bigger groups. SAEs don't normally harass other fish, no matter if
they look like SAEs or not.

"False SAE" is most often Garra cambodgiensis, a very SAE-like cyprinid
with a small sucker disc on lower lip (but with no sucker mouth). They are
not schoolers when adult, so keeping four of them in one tank which isn't
bigger than that isn't good. They might get along now, but later you most
probably end up with problems. Try to find a new home for three of them.

False SAEs harass fishes, which are their relatives, like SAEs. Four false
SAEs and one true SAE, which is smaller than them or close to their size,
isn't a good idea. On the other hand something like 4 true SAEs and one
false, which is smaller than them, is ok as a group of SAEs can easily
avoid that annoying little "false" guy.

I have one SAE in a 10 gal tank with 2 Platies and 2 Clown Loaches.
Also 6 SAEs in a 29 gal and 9 SAEs in a 75. In 3 years, living in
mixed community tanks, I have never seen any hostile action. The SAEs
mix in with the Clowns or the Clowns with the SAEs, not sure which
comes first.

I think you are unfair to speculate about the fish on just theories.
Clowns and SAEs are very special to me, thus I have so many and thus I
rush to defend the SAEs.

"On just theories"? I have kept several SAEs in pairs and in bigger groups
(up to 6), and in tanks from 160 to 300 liters (about 45 - 80 gallons), and
I've kept Garra cambodgiensis, two other Garra species and some other SAE
relatives like Flying Fox, Red-tailed Shark and Rainbow Shark.

Clowns and SAEs are very special to me, thus I have so many and thus I
rush to defend the SAEs.

I don't think that keeping SAEs (grow easily up to 5", sometimes up to
nearly 7") and Clown Loaches (easily up to 5-6", in very good aquarium up
to 12") in a mere 10g tank is a good idea. I think that we have discussed
this before here in this newsgroup, and I really don't approve it although
I think you had some kind of "explanation" why you think it is ok.

And what bad did I say about SAEs so that they need defending? They are my
favourire fish, and have been like that for over 10 years. It just took
some time for me to realize how much room they really need and how happy
they are in a big group with enough swimming space.

Sorry Liisa,

I reread your post and did not find reason to say your opinion was
based on theories.

clown loaches really are easier in larger tanks
but until they get big I've had quite a few in 50L tanks before
need a 650L tank to appreciate them really tho
those pakistani/reticulated/chain loach things are probably the go for
smaller tanks
