Remote sump placement

Getting back in the hobby after several years out and am currently planning
a reef in my new house. We really did not plan the house with a reef in mind
so we have some obstacles. One, the sump will have to be quite always away
from the tank (1st Floor tank and Sump in the basement). Is it better to
place circulating pump near the tank "pulling water from the sump" or place
the pump near the sump "pushing the water to" the tank. 90gal tank, 150gal
sump. Thanks for the input.

Place the pump by the sump. remote setups are actually allways
preferable much quieter. Plus it gives a good excuse for a fish room :)

You want to push the water with the pump, not pull it.
Along the same idea, any time a reducing valve is used on
a pump, it should always be on the output, not the input
of the pump.

I had a similar setup for several years before my house fire in February.
Just now getting things started up again. 120 gal upstairs, another 90 gal
downstairs with DSB, skimmer, etc. I used a little giant to push the water
upstairs and got along great. Don't forget to include the additional head
height to maintain your water volume. You will need a little bigger pump
going from the basement. I think you will really like it. You can watch the
tank and other than the overflow not have any of he other related filtering
noises. It also keeps the area around your tank less cluttered. Good luck.
