Breeding Guppy/Platy
My question is: If a male guppy and a female guppy have different color,
would they breed? For example if the male guppy is red and female is black is it possible to have babies. The same question goes for platies and other live bearer. thanks |

Most of the different livebearers species you see (platys, mollies, guppies, swordtails) are all of the same species regardless of their colour. A few of them have one or two subspecies (e.g. variatus), but they will generally all interbreed anyway. Some separate species will interbreed as well. The swordtails and platys have been so interbred in the trade that is generally nearly impossible to tell what you are really getting. Nearly all swordtails are sword/platy hybrids. |

Thanks for the tinfomarion. Another question I have is, is it posisble for a
female platy to breed without a male in the auqarium? I hae a female palty that I bought a moth ago and now it's getting bigger and bigger everyday. "dc" wrote in message . .. Yep, female platies can store sperm for as many as seven instances of gestation. http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?showtopic=99216 DaveZ AW |

She may just over-bound with ovum, but some livebearers are able to store male sperm and become pregnant later or many times over with it. |
