Fry in my Tank.
 

Please excuse my extreme Newbie-ness.

I've had my 30 Gallon running for about 80 days now - 40 without fish.

I live in a quite hard water area, so pH is about 7.4, NH3 - Nil, NO2 -
Nil, NO3 - 7 to 10 PPM. 10% water change once a week. Twice weekly pH
testing, once weekly Ammonia and Nitrites/Nitrates testing. Filters
cleaned and replaced regularly.

My tank is moderately planted. Plants seemed to die off at first, but
are making a comeback. Fed once a week with some liquid plant food.

Light is on 12-14 hours a day, Airstone the same. No CO2.

I have 6 Zebra Danios and 10 Tetras (8 Neon and 2 Glowlights). Fish seem
quite happy. Lots of movement, seem to get on well. I feed flake once a
day, five minutes to eat up. Freeze dried brine shrimp once a week.

And now the question: (at last!).

There are a load of small fry in my tank. They seemed to be food for the
fish (particularly and Danios), so I cut the top off (4 inches or so) a
large transparent coke bottle, and placed it inverted into the tank, so
that the rim stuck about 5mm from the surface. I netted 10 or so fry and
put them in there with some leaf cover. I drain and replenish the water
daily in this little nursery.

My questions a

* should I do this with the remaining fry in the tank (there are still
at least half a dozen fry left in the tank).

* How should I feed the little guys in the nursery? IS there a liquid
feed I can give them? Will some algae do? Flake ground finely?

Is having fry in your tank a good sign? I'd imagine it is. Is there a
way to tell Danio from Tetra fry? How long until I can let them back
into the tank?

Sorry about the ignorance. I have some answers already, but there is
only so much you can glean from Google - sometimes you just need to hear
an experienced opinion.

I think you are doing well.
You might place some small holes around your nursery and glue some
pieces of styro to the sides as floatation devices, this will had some
water circulation to your homemade nursery. I also add small pieces of
wonder shells to my hatcheries for improved water quality, but this is
not a nessesity.
As for feeding, it depends on the size of the fry (you did not state
what fish they are). For vey small fry, newly hatched brine shrimp.
For many fry, especially live bearers, I powder Spirulina Flake in my
fingers to feed to these fry. Spirulina is very digestable and most
Spirulina Flakes have fish meal and other ingredients that make them an
excellent fry food.

Nice! They sound like danio fry.
They will have been scattered in your plants earlier and will have hatched.
lotsa research on danios so google image a picture of fry hey;)
Ground flake will work wonders, and yes there are new liquid and solid fry
foods available.
Greenwater is also viable.
If it was me I'd almost be inclined to setup a bucket pond outside for them
to grow up in.
They will need a while before they can go back in with parents
danios like to eat little things
But yes it's a good sign ya got fry in there
even better sign if they are tetras!

I thought they were Danio fry alright. Still about 20 or so that I can
find in the tank. They are getting bigger, but also being picked off by
the Adult Danios. I might move them all into a proper nursery tank (hard
to catch little the buggers!).

12-14h is okay, an airstone - like CO2 input - no "must"..

What kind of filter is yours..?

Did you try hatched brine shrimp larvae..? Several other
life food..? Other frozen food..?

Hard to say. They would possibly find more life food in the
main tank. BTW I'm no friend of dead food for fry..

Well.., their instinct let them spawn but I'm sure they'll
feel happy in your 30g tank..!

Is there a way to tell Danio from Tetra fry?

Neon and Glowlight fry are shy, they prefer the dark and to
hide..

Zebra fish are Indian creek fish and their fry prefer the
light and to swim around in the filter flow..
