keeping nitrate levels down
 

hi

i was sold a nitrate removal sachet from the fish shop which did seem
to work, but it says in the box that you need to recharge the sachet,
bu pouring salt water over the bag for one hour and then repeating this
procedure for two hours. is this correct? how can it be done? are there
any simpler ways to keep nitrate levels safe?

That's sounds a bit too labour intensive to me.

I have the instructions for one of these pouches:
"Dissolve 80g of aquarium salt in 240ml of warm tap water (48C) and soak
the pouch for two hours then rinse lightly in tap water. Pouch is now
ready to use"

aside from the sachet have you tried.... partial water changes?

yep i do about 20% every 7 to 14 days. I suspect reading help from
people from another of my messages, that its a combination of;

1. heavy handed feeding
2. not enought plants

Check your tap water. Mine has Nitrates.

You can feed lighter and change more water. But, from what I've seen,
you need a LOT of thriving plants to make a significant impact. And
IMHO aquatic gardening is a hobby in and of itself.

I'd say make it 25% every 7 days on the dot and your problems will probably
vanish.
give the gravel a good vacume and clean out excess mulm.
the only plants that are gonna save ya are duckweed and taro

I agree, more frequent or larger water changes are the key. I do
between 25% - 50% every week and that keeps them in check. If I get lax
and go longer then a week between changes I can measure the effect
easily with a climb in nitrates.
