Pardon my ignorance, does a protein skimmer remove phosphate from a marine tank? No, it does not remove phosphates. Protein skimmer removes *proteins* before they desintegrate to nitrates and phosphates. |
Protein Skimmer and Phosphate
Yes it does by removing organics that contain phosphorous.
There has been some thought that it removes orthophosphate, but I've seen no proof of that. Wayne Sallee Wayne's Pets nospam wrote on 11/14/2006 7:53 PM: Pardon my ignorance, does a protein skimmer remove phosphate from a marine tank? |

Ahh, the great chemistry Guru speaks! You really don't have a clue! Lol. The OP asked about phosphate (PO4-3), not phosphorus. Although skimmers remove organic compouds that contain phosphorus, they DO NOT remove phosphate. While you're at it you may as well state that skimmers remove orgaincs that contain Carbon, Oxygen and Nitrogen. There has been some thought that it removes orthophosphate, but I've seen no proof of that. Goof ball, do you know what orthophosphate is? Orthophosphate and phosphate are the same thing! Duh. LOL ortho- a combining form used in the name of that acid in a given series of acids that contains the most water So it's very hydrated phosphate :-) Many years ago when the idea was presented that protein skimmers might remove orthophosphate, I looked it up, and it was defined as a highly vaporous form of phosphate. So much for that definition :-) Wayne Sallee Wayne's Pets |

Orthophosphate = Phosphate = PO4-3 http://www.chemindustry.com/chemicals/49433.html Many years ago when the idea was presented that protein skimmers might remove orthophosphate, I looked it up, and it was defined as a highly vaporous form of phosphate. So much for that definition :-) A vaporous form of phosphate? Are you kidding me? Skimmers DO NOT remove phosphate, orthophosphate or PO4-3. End of story. Skimmers ONLY remove compounds that have surfactant properties. Do you know what a surfactant is genius? Wayne Sallee Wayne's Pets |
