Cool Under Actinics?
 

hi,

I got my new 192 watt Coralife fixture yesterday. It wasnt everybody`s first
choice `round here, but it`s right for me, thanks for your input.

My Mushrooms were already doing pretty well, but in less than 24 hours under
the new light they have certainly perked-up. They also look awesome under
the actinics.

What are some other fairly pedestrian Corals (oxymoron,I know) that will
similiarly glow under the actinics. I`m using all 3 fixtures now, so my
Wattage is about 4.25 per gallon.

Are there fish that also shine under them? I read a post here that the
Banghai Cardinals look good in the actinic light?

Once again, thanks for all your help---so far, so good with the tank.

Horn corals look cool under a black light. Horn corals
need some space, as they like to send out digestive
threads. Looks neat under a microscope. Looks like rolling
stomach lining.

Do the Horn Corals go under different names in the trade? I cant seem to
find them listed on internet Livestock sources.

Also---Do I have enough light (4.25 WPG) for Hammer Corals?

You can also do a google image search, though I just did,
and it took two pages for me to find the above pic.

Yea hammer coral will do fairly well under that light, but
would do better under higher lighting.

I just wish people would not get a tank, and then decide
on lighting later. It's so much better when setting up a
reef tank to decide on really good lighting, and tank at
the same time.

There are PLENTY of corals you can grow with that lighting. Check out
some of the lower light leathers, zoas, and other softies... As
already stated there are low light LPS that would do well under that
light as well.

Yeah---
I guess planning ahead is always best. But sometimes things just snowball
out of nowhere. When I got the tank as a gift back in August, I thought it
was gonna be African Cichlids. My wife said they looked like "fish you fry
up in a pan" (I dont agree, BTW)--and insisted that it be Sal****er.
Then I stumbled onto the info overload on the `net and the whole "Live Rock"
thing. And each new possibility became more attractive than the previous.
This thing isnt gonna be a full blown reef tank like the ones I see on the
internet.
I`m just gonna do my best to keep a few pieces of "pedestrian corals" nice
and healthy. If there is a next time, I`ll do it "more right", but things
are going pretty well at the moment (knock on wood)
and I`m enjoying the heck out of it.

Lets say if I get 14000K blue bulbs - will they support fluorescence?
Or I still should have actinic bulbs for that?

I had one that did. I forget the brand, but it had a lot
of actinic in it. It looked neat, but it did not look as
natural. I like 10 k mh lights as they give a more natural
look than the higher kelvin bulbs. I like to see the
natural colors. So I let that bulb run for a few days, and
then decide "no it's not growing on me, I'm changing it."
