Hi Dave, I don't know if it's the same thing but I have a 120 litre tank (30 US Gallon) which I'm currently running through a fishless cycle and since I put in a nice java fern on bogwood and some other plants to help things along I've got an infestation of small white 1/4 inch threads which attach to the glass and filter housing. If I look really closely they have a tiny branched bit on the end (like little umbrellas). At first I thought they might be some kind of spore since there is also a heavy infestation on the java fern but under a microscope I've seen both a 'hydra-like' infusoria spp and branched thread like thing with these little moving blobs on the end. I'm not so worried about the hydra type creature but the branched thing could be some kind of fungus and seems to fit better with what I'm seeing with the naked eye. I haven't yet been able to identify it. There's a sketch I made at: http://www.muddylittlefox.org.uk/microscopy-120Lit.jpg Maybe I need an anti-fungal too? Thanks, Muddy |

If its p ossible to QT the fish in that tank on a temporary basis for
about 6 or 8 hours, a potassium Permanganate treatment would render any fungus or other undesired junk inert. If it was fungus or a simple one cell growth, it wold be oxidized into oblivion, and no damage done to other plants. You can find PP at Lowes in the pond section. I fiind it invaluable for fungal or other problems which are normally encountered with aquarium or pond fish. Its simply an oxidizer, not a med...... A 2% solution should be more than sufficieint for any pond or tank related problem. All fish do not take kindly to PP so thats why I recomended removing them temporarily until 6 to8 hour cycle of treatment is over with or neutralized. White Stuff, not on Fish
Hi,
I've just had another, more detailed, look under the microscope at the organism which seems to be blooming in my tank and seems very similar to David's and made some more detailed drawings. Then I sent the drawings to a microbiologist who has identified them as (probably) a stalked peritrich, which is a kind of ciliate protozoan. I think it should be harmless in the aquarium and should not cause any disease in fish so I'm breathing a big sigh of relief. Of course, I don't know if this is the same organism as David's or not, but, certainly on the surface, it seem to be good news! Hope this helps, Muddy |
