Any disadvantage to red lava rock in the filter?
 

Canister or wet/dry?

The stuff is cheap as hell. I can get the bed of my truck filled for the
price a small bag of 'bio-media' at Petco.

I mean, look at the freakin' spendy sintered glass pellets from Eheim. Yeah,
they are porous as hell, but the pores are freaking tiny.
The slime coat of good bacteria covers just them (the pores).

Bio-balls are just plastic doodads that work, and prove that the spendy
sintered glass pellets are a ripoff.

Lava rock is ever so much cheaper than bio-balls, and infinitely more porous
to boot. And the pores are big enough to actually be useful..


If there is an error in my thinking, please let me know.

My larger indoor Aquaclear filters came with the bags of biommax beads. I
use the cheap red lavarock in the larger home made outdoor filters. They
work great. It seems almost everything made for the aquarium trade is
obscenely overpriced.
