Krib breeding questions removal of fry, when?
I've gotten lucky with 2 of my kribs, they're doing quite well... except I
think I jumped the gun, and may be putting my babies at risk without knowing it... on their second batch, it was larger, and they became free swimming a bit earlier than the previous batch, and I was increasingly worried that they'd be picked off, like the first batch, only 5 made it. This batch, I've got 12, but when I seperated them to the breeder net, the female became hugely disoriented, angry toward the net, and would hang out just below the babies in the net... The male, became increasingly hostile toward her, and he still guards the pot and I'm not sure if he thinks they're still there, or if there is some 'other' reason I'm unaware of.... So my questions are, and no in this particular order.... 1. when is the right time to seperate the mother and fry? 2. do the fry inherit a learned behaviour from the mother, like eating habits and times? 3. why does the male display such hostility now, and not before... before she ate his tail off for some odd reason, but this time, they're both ok, but he's become hostile... why? Ok, that's enough for now, just trying to get some understanding on a few points... So my questions are, and no in this particular order.... 1. when is the right time to seperate the mother and fry? you don't. Leave both parents with the fry . They are normally excellent parents. In the case of one starting to eat the fry, usually the male, then remove the male and the feamle should continue to guard the fry. 2. do the fry inherit a learned behaviour from the mother, like eating habits and times? you determine the eating habits and times they eat. Fish will eat anytime. The behaviour they inherit is the same with any animal, breeding, caring for young etc etc. 3. why does the male display such hostility now, and not before... before she ate his tail off for some odd reason, but this time, they're both ok, but he's become hostile... why? do you have any dither fish in the tank with the Kribs. The feamle guards the nest and swims about the tank with the fry following her around. The male's job is to protect the female and the fry from any predators. If no predators are present then the male having nothing to do can and will turn against the female and the fry. Ok, that's enough for now, just trying to get some understanding on a few points... Thanks. I had similar problems breeding Rainbow Cichlids. They would spawn, the eggs would hatch and the parents would eat the fry. This happened over and over. I moved the pair into a larger tank with some Tetras and livebearers as dither fish and bingo. They spawned, protected the fry and the male was kept busy guarding. Rick |

... 1. when is the right time to seperate the mother and fry? Just so I'm getting this straight, you're separating the Fry and mother, not the fry from the mother? These 2 should always be kept together. Possibly the male too, was he the one eating the fry? As you know Cichlids are good parents and both of them should be involved in the raising of the fry. To answer your question, if you plan to breed them then don't let them spawn in the main tank, this is very stressful for both yourself and especially the fish. They should be separated into a small breeding tank of their own beforhand and conditioned into breeding. This yields high survival rates and is much more enjoyable, keep the parents together until the male begins harassing her or the fry again (this should be a few weeks). The female can be placed into the main tank again once the fry have grown up a little. 2. do the fry inherit a learned behaviour from the mother, like eating habits and times? Possibly, but instinct is key and the need to survive is strong in the little fellas, have some faith and let nature take its course. Let them get used to seeing you and recognising food :) 3. why does the male display such hostility now, and not before... before she ate his tail off for some odd reason, but this time, they're both ok, but he's become hostile... why? Possibly he is ready for another shagging and she is not ;o Ok, that's enough for now, just trying to get some understanding on a few points... Thanks. One more thing, make sure the filter in the breeding tank is not sucking up the fry, either cover up the inlet holes with old pantyhose or get a bubble type filter. |

Mate I kept mine with thier folks till they were being chased away by them.
They kept many mollies and platys at bay for a long time then I put the babies in a bigger tank to grow them out. |
