ID Wild minnow?
 

While vacationing at a spring in Florida, I found a wild minnow (or
small fish) that was black with gold spots. I would like to find some for
sale. Anyone know what it might be?

They were slender, about one inch, and swam with the other minnows which
might have been "mosquito fish".

Maybe this is not the right group for this? Is there a better one? I have
done several google searches for it but am unable to find it.

There are few that deal or have dealt with wild caught especially
minnows.... www.fishbase.org is kinda the everyfish in the world book on
the internet, so maybe a quick gander thru it might yeild more results....

Small size and neat colors/patterning made me think of darters in
general. These north American natives make excellent aquarium fish, at
least according to native-fish fans. There's a company that sells
darters for aquaria: http://www.btdarters.com .

Of course it needn't have been a native; fish get introduced from
everywhere to everywhere, it seems.

No, but close. It's got the right shape, but not distinctively colored
enough. The main change in shape is that my minnow was clearly built for
surface eating, ie. the head was flattish with a mouth near the top.

It is conspicuously black, as if the whole thing were dipped in black
laquer, with some bright, heavy-yellow, gold spots. In spite of being only
an inch or so it is so distinctive that I am amazed I was never able to find
it, even after perusing some of the pages recommended here.

Thanks for pulling up the post again though, I had pretty much given up.

Nothing more than a hint, but you probably want to look through the various
topminnows, paying extra care to find pictures of them in breeding colors
as well. You might also get some help from the north american native fish
association www.nanfa.org
