Pengiun 330 probs
 

I just inherited a 55Gal Oceanic tank, which I'm sure my cichlids will
appreciate more than my current 20Gal setup :). Anyhow, it came with a
Pengiun 330 Biowheel thingie. I tested it out, and it operates, but it won't
suck the water all the way up. Just about halfway and it stops. Is there a
part I can replace to make it work? A guy at the fish store remarked it
might the fan, which is apparenlty a $12 part, and would beat buying a $50
pump. Any input?

You did fill it with water before you tried to run it????
one thing I know is that filters will not prime themselves


yeah, we filled it with water.. and filled it with water.. and .... it kept
draining out the intake into the tank instead of sucking up.

Drs. Foster & Smith's latest catalog lists Penguin 330 filters for $19.99
(US) on sale. I've been happy with mine that I got at the LFS ($45),
haven't
had the need to try the catalog since then, but the prices seem very
reasonable.

Thanks.. I did some research on that pump today and found most prices in the
mid $20's.. hardly seems worth it to fix it :)

I've got two Penguin 330's and two Penguin 300's running. I'd try a couple
of things before buying parts or just giving up on the filter. Take out the
little magnet propeller thing and wipe it off with a paper towel. Clean the
little indentation it rested in with a Q-tip. Put it on the fish tank and
make sure the tube is seated tightly in the groove above the impeller. Make
sure the fish tank has filled. Dump water into the filter until it runs
back out into the tank. Then turn the filter on and keep dumping water into
the filter until the air is out of the intake tube.

If this doesn't work then I'd give up and buy a new one not a new part.
