cichlid help in Seattle
 

Hi! I am looking for help in locating somewhere in Seattle where I can
obtain a large fish tank. next year I am wanting to start a cichlid tank.
I want one that is over 75 gallons. I live in the middle part of the state
of Washington, but there really aren't many places here to get any good
deals, so I am willing to drive a few hours to get what I need.

I currently keep goldfish and have had much success with them. cichlids
really fascinate me and I've always wanted to have some. I don't plan on
starting until I do much more research on them (early next year). and I
know it will take a while for me to get the tank cycled and the pH correct
once I do begin this journey. I am leaning toward the African variety and I
am also leaning toward the ones that average about 4" - 6" inches in length.

any sites or books that someone can recommend is very much appreciated.

Hi Connie,
Welcome to the hobby of African Cichlids. Warning, once you start,
you'll be hooked! I'm not in the Seattle/Tacoma area, so I wouldn't be
much help on that. But that's a large area, I'm sure someone in that
area is bound to have a "reasonable priced" tank somewhere. I can
understand most LFS (live fish stores) want an arm and a leg for tanks,
especially the size you're after, over 75G. I'd try your local
classified ads in the Seattle/Tacoma papers, or your local paper in
middle Washington. There is likely a classified box, for the selling of
tanks, etc. "Usually" you can often catch a great price from someone who
is moving, & just wants to dump the tank fast. As far as books, web
sites etc.. I'm a breeder, & rarely visit nothing but breeding sites,
dealers, & such, but your web search under "african Cichlids" will turn
up a bunch. Cichlid books can be obtained at public libraries, LFS,
Ebay, and most book stores. They (A.Cichlids) are not difficult to keep
in all honesty Connie, so enjoy, sorry I couldn't help more, but others
will certainly reply w/more help.

ok. will be sure to do that. and just so you know all is not lost, i'll
make sure to stay away from the "dfs" (*dead* fish store), due to your great
advice :)

There are several nice stores here in Seattle. The International distrct has
a few and there's a pretty good one in the U-district. They had quite a good
selection of both Malawi and Tanganyikan cichlids. It's onRoosevelte and
about 65th.
