Size in gallons
Just bought a used aquarium which measures 19" x 20" x 60". The seller said
it was Oceanic Brand and held 100 gallons. My calculations came up with less than 100 gallons, though math is not my strong point. Oceanic no longer makes that size. Any opinions? |

Close enough. |

Let's see (using round numbers): 19"x20"x60" = 47cm x 50cm x 150cm = 352500 cm^3 = 356 l = 93gal jue |

A US gallon is 231 ci. 19x20x60=22800 ci = 98.7 US gallons. Now, assuming your glass is 1/2" 18.5x19x59=20738.5 = 89.77 US gallons inside. But tanks are sold by the outside dimensions. |

I guess I'll just measure the water while I put it in during initial setup. |

If you want to know how much water fits in the tank, then that is the only way anyway, because you are loosing quite a bit of space for gravel, decoration, machinery, empty space on top of tank, etc. While the water volume can be very valuable for e.g. medication, it is a different number than the nominal size of a tank. Therefore I prefer the European custom where tank size is specified in outside dimensions (e.g 50x50x100) instead of by volume such that you cannot confuse nominal size and water content. jue |
