How tame are your fish?
For the longest time, all my fish would scatter when I walked by the tank or
opened the lid to feed, coming back after they felt the coast was clear. Now I'm lucky to get my finger back when dropping in food :p. And everytime I walk by, they congregate by the area I drop the food in. Sometimes I can just drop my finger in by itself and touch a few fishes, esp. the pleco, who just sits there. The only one who is extremely cautious is my big Azureus. |

I get the same from most of my tanks. The exceptions being the wild caught fish. They always seem to be more cautious. But they don't scatter, they just wait to eat until after I've moved back a bit. My wild caught black calvus still sometimes hides when I come into the room. I've had him longer than any other fish I currently have. What I think is really neat, is a tank full of fish that comes to the surface when you feed them, but if someone else comes over, the tank looks empty. ;-) Knowing that my fish somehow recognize me I think is great. My Oscar (Flower) would get seemingly excited when I came into the room..
Often times Flower would jump clear of the tank/water trying to get food from my fingers.. Unfortuanatly, I recently sold Flower and his other two buddies ( Oscars as well ) to an LFS.. I have stopped in to see them from time to time, all three of them stay together still, even with other Oscars in the LFS's tank.. Tim "Amateur" wrote in message .. . Amateur hah-hah... I experience the same thing when I have company. The fish bolt and then timidly come out. All I have to do is move on the couch and they all bumrush the front glass :) |

Tim Where I work, the worse fish to feed are the teenage Oscars and the Nimbochromis livingstoni. Both of these fish froth the water in anticipation, and at a tank height of about 5', it's hard not to take a bit of a shower. It's not unusual for them to get half out of the water, to be the first to get food (and they are well fed). Their ability to recognize their feeders is in this case a disadvantage. Some of our fish will swim into our hands (giving new meaning to the term hand-fed ;~). These are either very confident fish (female Bettas in a well planted tank show no fear), or they just have no fear (GF & livebearers, the latter in well planted tanks), or they are just highly food motivated (see paragraph above). Getting larger smarter fish to eat out of your hand through trust & familiarity is a special treat though. NetMax |

I breed bettas and can pick them up with my hand, they all swim into it as
soon as it goes in the tank. I now raise my african fry in the same tanks, as they cause the africans to respond the same, not into my hand, but they will come right over with the bettas. At the moment I have a 25g with betta, yellow lab, electric blue hap and some salvini fry; a 20g with the same - the salvinis and + some grand peacocks and a 10 g with small betta, salvini and zebra fry. The 90 g africans also respond to me, but wont allow me to pick them up. My oscars are about 5 inches now and will let me cup them and pat them, and I've held my fire eel. It is very nice to be recognized :) My blues eye fry that were raised in a species tank are still very skittish, going to stick with the bettas from now on :)) Kelly "T" wrote in message link.net...
