Fishless tank cycling
Can anyone give me a source for ammonia so I can do some fishless tank
cycling? All the grocery stores near me have ammonia, but it has surfactant in it. Andy |

It is in many off-the-shelf fertilizers, the first stage in the aquarium is its' conversion to ammonia ... just a thought. I purchased an 80 lb. sack from an agricultural/agchem supply in my area. It was less that $20USD for a lifetime supply! The stuff I use is in "prill" form. Regards, JS |

Nasty is in the persons mind. YOu into golden showers etc so be it, but **** is a perfect source of ammonia and there is nothing ugly or nasty about it. Were not talking about needing a liter of the the stuff only needs about a cc or so to seed the tank................and in no time there will be no signs of it left anywhere........ |

That's what I did at the grocery store, looked at the generic no-frills stuff and every last one said "contains surfactants." I guess I'll have to keep hunting... Andy |

Urine has diluted UREA in it, not ammonia. The nitrogenous waste byproduct by animal groups that I know of a Fish and amphibians - Ammonia Reptiles and Birds - Uric Acid Mammals - Urea In fish, the ammonia is excreted directly and immediately dissolves in the water around it. Uric acid comes out as-is. Hence why bird poop can sometimes take the paint off a car In Mammals, urea is diluted with water to make urine. I honestly don't know if Nitrosomus sp. can digest urea. May need to check... Not that I am going to **** in my tank... Andy |

However, often you will hear the "experts/gurus" start the nitrogen cycle with ammonia, [ammonia - nitrites - nitrates.] However, it is actually, [urea - ammonia - nitrites - nitrates.] And, urea is actually 90-95% percent of the solids in urine. So, it gets a much more "natural" nitrogen cycle going in your tanks if you begin with urea; as, micro-organisms/phytoplankton/algaes/etc. break the molecular bonds of urea to ammonia in the first place; you need these organisms also ...
