separate the fry??. once these fish start breeding there is no stopping them
and before long he will be wondering what to do with them. Our local LFS
will take them but give nothing in return as they sell so slow but they are
IMO a neat cichlid, excellent parents and will bite the hell out of your
hands if you stick them in there while they have fry.

As cruel as some people think, they can be an excellent source for feeder
fish for other Cich's.. I only have a female Convict.. She has been used for
a target fish in my Malawi tank... Sounds mean, but she is by far tougher
than the rest of my Cic's..

lots of people use them for feeders along with Kribs. They spawn so often
with large broods that they make for perfect feeders.

I notice with mine that when I clean out a brood that the parents act the
same as humans would when children are taken away from them. Once the
tank is cleaned out, they stay hidden until they have a new batch. Their
maternal instinct seems quite strong!

they are know as the best parental care givers among cichlids, actually
quite amazing to watch them. I did a gravel vac in their 40 g tank the other
day and the male constantly attached the siphon tube.

A recent brood of one of my female Kenyi's, I had the female standing gaurd,
she would rush the glass when I came near, in an attempt to chase me off.. I
suspect the Con's would be even stronger in thier quest to protect thier
young...
