Help identifying a Malawi Mbuna
 

Hello-

I just discovered this group and must say I've picked up a lot of
great tips/info. I'm hoping somebody can help identify some cichlids i
picked up at my LFS. I've included a link to the pictures. Apologies
for the quality, but hoping it is good enough (:

From my research I believe it is a Pseudotropheus Saulosi.
Can anybody confirm or dispute this?

Some of the pics show some light bars starting to appear on the
dominant one. They are the bright yellow you can see in a few pics.
Any help would be appreciated.

I believe they are not Pseudotropheus Saulosi.
Male Pseudotropheus Saulosi are blue. Female ones are yellow but
somewhat more lemmon, not so golden as your pics seem to show.

But I can´t ID them either.

Only having one egg spot, it might be a juvenile male, it'll turn blue
someday

At first glance it looked like a saulosi to me as well.

My guess is either Maylandia Estherae or Pseudotropheus Sp. Pulu Point
I really dont think they're saulosi, I feel that mine had fewer and fatter
vertical bars, and the ladies dorsal tip area went darker some even black,
not that lighter yelolow orange color at all.

Thanks for all the feedback. After looking around at some more and different
posts and messages I came across, I think Phil was right with his
Pseudotropheus Sp. Pulu Point ID. Although, I am seeing it as a Metriaclima
Estherae "Pulu Point" aka Pulu Point Zebra. Which brings up another
question....is this a new breed or a hybrid?

Metriaclima is the new genus that the zebra complex of Pseudotropheus was
split off into. Once Pseudotropheus is done being worked with, you'll find
very few fish left in the Pseudotropheus genus. The main quality that will
determine what Pseudotropheus goes where, will be by the way in which it
feeds. Other considerations such as tooth shape, body shape, etc will also
determine the definition of each new genus description. Jay Stauffer, a
scientist who lives in Pennsylvannia and travels to Malawi each year,
described the Metriaclima genus. The subgenus estherae was set aside for the
fish that were previously known as "Red Zebras". The term "Pulu Point"
refers to the geographical location on Lake Malawi where the fish were
collected from or their parents were collected from. Within each Genus and
subgenus, it's possible to have hundreds of geographical variations in the
fish.
