Weird Algae Help
 

I recently have had this weird sort of algae growing on the leaves of
many of my plants in my 30g planted tank. As far as I can tell from
internet resources it is 'staghorn' algae, which i have never heard of
- appearently none of the LFS people have heard of it either. its
kind of thread-like and branches out like antlers at different points.
Anyhow, it seems to be taking over many of my plants and I am unsure
of how to combat it. I was sold some 'headstand' tetras by one LFS
who swore to me they would eat the damn stuff, but so far i have not
seen a noticeable difference... Should I stop supplying nutrients or
fertilizers to my plants??? what should i do? Any advice would be
greatly appreciated...

I had this in my tank more than a few years ago-so long ago that I'm
not sure what of the many things I tried was responsible for getting
rid of it. I do remember removing lots of it by hand.I would do a
water change,check water quality and nitrate,phosphate levels make
sure you are not overdosing trace and nutrients and increase your CO2.
Are your other plants growing well? Maybe it is a lack of nitrate or
phosphate instead of too much. First test levels before you take any
action and keep removing it by hand regardless of the course you take.

Manually remove as much as you can and increase your
nitrates. That should help getting rid of it. Its a relativly easy
algae to get rid of.

Ghori knows all this already :)
The genus is Compsopogon.
Generally appear where the NH4= NO2=NO3 cycle is weak. Too many
fish/too much food etc for the tank's plants to remove the NH4.

Any build up and you'll get algae blooms. Lots of light and it often
comes along as Green water, the next one is the species.
The NH4 is oten gone by the time you see the algae and test. It
doesn't take too much NH4 or for too long.

The algae doesn't like CO2 and lower PH around 7.1ppm. My suggestion just
increase the CO2 level and you'll see how it goes.

The other posters give great advice about Nitrate levels... As far as
getting rid of it... Black Molly's LOVE the stuff!

cut off the light during the day for 3 hours. It is OK for a fish but any
algae should die because of photosintethic problem.

succeeded in killing algae by turning off their lights for a couple of
hours midday.

succeeded in killing algae by turning off their lights for a couple of
hours midday.

On the other hand, many people has really damaged there plants trying

It wouldn't in any way affect the algae, even if left for more than several
hours...
