Ranchu hanging out in the corner of the tank

I have three very active goldfish (two Orandas and one Ranchu), but the
fourth (another Ranchu) likes to hang out by itself in the corner of the
tank. When fed, it'll join the others, otherwise it'll just hang out in the
corner. Is there anything wrong or do some fish prefer to be by themselves?

I just added another fish today (total of 5 in a 55 gallon tank) and the new
fish gets along with the three active ones.

Rodney,

Did you introduce them all at the same time (the previous 4)?
Or did the sulky Ranchu get put in last?

I hope you quarantined that new fish. otherwise you will see the originals getting
sick since the new one most likely has some cooties and is stressed and shedding.
what are your water quality parameters, ammonia, nitrites, nitrates and pH?
do some big water changes for the next 5 days or so. add 1 teaspoon salt per 5
gallons, no additives, dissolve first, add slowly. Ingrid

I have two veiltails that are in a tank together. They used to be more
active when there were two commons in the tank with them, but we moved
the commons to their own tank for space and aggressiveness reasons
(the commons were pushing the veiltails around, especially after being
fed - not WHILE being fed, after being fed). Now the Veiltails have a
spot behind a hornwort plant that they like to sit in. The small one
ventures out a little more often, but about 50% of their day is spent
swimming around pretty slowly.

Before anyone asks, my water parameters are fine. Zero
ammonia/nitrites, ~20ppm nitrites, and weekly water changes and plants
seem to be dropping that pretty steadily.

Rodney, we had a similar situation - 1 fish staying in one corner all day,
facing the corner and 1" below the surface. My wife changed ALL the water
(which was getting a bit cloudy) over the weekend, and now all 8 fish swim
around happy again.

I made a change this weekend that may have had an effect: I put a
proper tank lid and light on the tank. Prior to this, I had a light
mounted nearby the tank, with an older tank lid. This weekend I went
and got a light that sits directly over top of the tank. The extra
light seems to have perked them up.

Also, I find moving their decorations around a little week to week
keeps them a little more interested in their surroundings.
