Nitrate control
 

I would like to know what other ways are there to lower the nitrate
levels in a fish tank other then water changes. I can never seem to
get my nitrate levels below 100ppm. I have noticed that my Black
Moore develops a white spot on his head if I do not do regular water
changes every 7 to 10 days. Can this white spot
be caused by high Nitrate level and what might this spot be.

My ammonia levels before and after water changes is 0. I am using an
ammonia substrate to help remove the ammonia.

Plants love nitrate. I have heard of people who don't want plants in the
tank to use cuttings, such as from a spider plant, and put the roots in the
filter instead of the tank (clean well first, of course). This would eat up
your nitrate, and give you great plants, too! Otherwise, you could try live
plants in with the fish, but do some research since goldfish like some
plants. Also, if your plant is covered in baby snails when you bring it
home, and you put it in the tank, the fish will rip it apart trying to get
the snails (a mistake I made). Just a suggestion....

if you got gravel it could be it is loaded with organic material.
bare bottom tanks with 10 gallons per GF and using high quality food fed in small
amounts only need to do partial water changes to keep nitrates 20 ppm or lower .
as long as your tap water doesnt have nitrates.
veggie filters are wonderful for removing nitrates. actually, so is string algae.
my mom had a 20 gallon and she did like a quart of water change once a week but it
was loaded with string algae and the fish did fine for nearly a year. Ingrid
