In article ,

I setup a new 80l (20G) freshwater tank 3 days ago. The shipwreck
ornament that was put in has a wooden mast. The wooden mast has green
fur like algae growing around it already, approx. 6mm (1/4") all around
the wood.
I am tempted to take the ornament out and remove the mast as best i
can. Is this necessary or is it fine to leave it as it is? If I leave
it, once the tank has cycled is there a fish that will eat this algae?
It seems to be growing at an alarming rate.

I like this article;

A tank without plants will always have algea of some kind.
A newly setup tank, planted or not, will have an algea blow-out until
the tank (and caretaker) stabilize.
