Default Painting back of tank?

Some people paint a piece of acrylic (away from the tank) and once it is cured
and dry, put it on the back of the tank for a nice visual effect. I've seen
some amazing ideas on RC in this area, where it gave a look of infinity with
various blue hues.

Anyone done this?
I'd like to paint the *outside* of the rear pane.
Can I safely do this with the tank running? (I promise not to clean
the roller in the tank).

Flat latex OK? Or would a satin or semi-gloss be better.

What looks best- dark blue or black?
I currently have 4x96w diy pc lighting (2 10kk, 1 actinic, 1 7100k
'blue'- and BTW working on a cool LumuLeds LED night viewing light).

TIA
