Thusly "NetMax" Spake Unto All:
What do you guys recommend as an algae eater in a 58 G tank with
bolivian rams, angels, corys and swordtails?
That would depend on the type of algae and whether the tank is planted
or
not. If the Angel is not too big, you might try 3 or 4 Otos.
Otos are very sensitive fish.
I'd recommend a few ancistrus or siamese algae eaters instead.
Regarding the Oto's sensitivity, I find that it's mostly transport
related. Almost like their metabolism is very high and they don't easily
store enough energy for trips. Once acclimated, they life expectancy
becomes normal for small active fish (which is to say, not very long).
I have a bristlenose in my planted 66g, and he does a good job but he is
not detail oriented ;~). Otos tend to get into the smaller spots and on
to small leaves.
Some true SAEs I think would do the brown algae as well. They just get a
bit gregarious as they get older, and I like to keep them in groups.
Ultimately, the best algae crew is a diversified group, because the algae
you will eventually get is what no one eats.
