I buy locally, but I live in Florida and have plenty of good local stores.
There are good online suppliers too. If you can get what you want, buying
locally allows you to see what you are buying before you put down money.
Also, if you have a local reef club, you can often get some things like
mushrooms and xenia for free.

Personally, I don't think a reef tank is very hard to keep. If you want

reef, start a reef. If you buy that light and add a few mushroom
coralimorpharians you will have a reef.
