I can only guess that he got stuck for a brief period. Aquarium
heaters have two modes, on and off. I don't think they give much
advance warning by gradually warming.

If I ever set up another tropical tank I'll make sure my heaters have some
kind of guards over them. I'm glad you mentioned this.
