My really old ancistrus disappears for months sometimes. I'm sure I
would see him if I snuck up with a flashlight in the middle of the
night. The veggie discs I leave for him at lights out each evening is
always gone in the morning. Red dot or red asterisk, curse waning or
waxing, I really want to find a good female to keep my young male
company. He's been hanging out around the mouth of his cave waiting
for a pretty young thing to pass his way. My lfs told me he will stop
ordering ancistrus for a few months, while working with his supplier
to find out just how widespread the problem is. I might try a
different dealer, after checking out who is using which suppliers.

I doubt they will reveal their supplier's name (unless this is your
buddy, and even then you need to know who the others are buying from). I
never found a good supplier of Bushynose. Imports didn't have them and
the North Americans were too expensive. I was at the annual fish club
auction where I met a person who bred them, and he became my regular
supplier. I also managed to find a local supplier of Angelfish (another
bad fish to import). I would check with your local Aquarium Society. If
you don't have one, then this is your opportunity to start one and pick a
meeting spot close to your home (that's the advantage of being first ;~).
