i'm not allowed a bigger tank. I only got a 1 gallon to work with. And i
plan on making it work at that.

One gallon cannot work for a GF. I hope you realize how large a healthy GF
gets to be in less than a year. They're also an oxygen and food hungry fish
that produce a lot of waste. Picture keeping a person in closet with the
door barely cracked. You need to return the GF and get a betta or perhaps a
few pretty male guppies.
Meanwhile do your ammonia and nitrite tests....... and constant partial
water changes.
