I know mellie's tank is in the house so this would not matter in her case,
but since in the spring there are such temp changes between night and day
could that bother them at all? Here in pgh we are at 70 during the day and
40 at night

Despite what some people claim I haven't seen any harm come to GF from
natural outdoor temperature changes. Even fancy GF live through the winter
here where the temps drop below freezing for days at a time and ice forms on
their ponds or tubs. I add a heater just to keep an opening in the ice for
gas exchange.
Indoors they have no heaters so the water is about the same as the sunroom
temp year round. Cooler in winter and warmer in summer. Also warmer in the
day than at night when the sun is shining.
The only loss I had due to temp' was outdoors last spring. The koi and GF
fry were maybe a week old when the temps dropped to freezing. About 50% of
them died. But they were extremely tiny.
