Remember that if you want to use a freshwater tank with a sump you
will need to arrange some sort of overflow to get the water back down
to the sump. A proper marine tank will have a baffle type overflow
and will be drilled somewhere behind that to let you pipe the
sal****er back down to that sump. You can use a standpipe if the
bottom of the tank has been drilled and you have access below. The
height of the baffle or standpipe sets the level. Although it's not
the ideal way to do it, you can convert a basic tank by getting a
reasonably large hole drilled at water level, and attaching a bulkhead
type plumbing fitting there, rather like an overflow is provided on a
domestic water tank. I say not ideal because obstruction and water
level variation is more likely with such an arrangement, but it worked
OK for me for one tank I had.
