You're suggesting the etiquette is outdated, and just a product of silly old
people who haven't changed with new technology.
You've missed the fact that the volume of data in Usenet newsgroups has grown
faster than either bandwidth or hard drive space.
The binaries newsgroups place significant strain on even large, well-connected
servers. There are good reasons to keep most discussion groups text-only.
