Some people use uv sterilizers on reef tanks, but most do
not because it kills the beneficial stuff in the water.
And there are many filter feeders in the reef tank that
feed on this.

That's impossible. UV sterilizers kill some of the bacteria and
protozoae in the water flowing past the bulb. They can't possible have
any effect on anything living in the rest of the tank.
