I'm pretty sure it's the shaft, but I can't see how this comes out.
It's not ceramic like other Hagens, but metal. I was going to yank it
out with the pliers, but did not want to break it, in the event it's
not removable?
That is exactly how it comes out. They are removable; it just sits in a
shallow socket. Use pliers, pull and twist gently but firmly. It will
come out.
The shafts are usually the culprit, but sometimes wear will build-up on
the
inside of the impeller as well. If replacing the shaft doesn't eliminate
the noise, replace the impeller as well and your AQ should be dead-silent
again.
It is not uncommon for AQs to become noisy for this reason after about a
year of use or so if they are not cleaned regularly--even then they
occasionally become noisy anyway.
Thanks, the new motor came today. $29 CDN.
But I think I'll rehabilitate the old one in any event.
