I heard you can hire people to do this while on Vacation. I know little
about these services. I do know with all the valuables they own they
wouldn't allow strangers into their home while they were away. I'm lucky
in that my step-daughter comes over every other day when we travel. She
takes care of the dogs and the fish plus brings in the mail. My brother
and
his wife aren't so fortunate.

I have someone who comes into my house to care for my cat when I'm out
of town. She will also take care of the fish if I need her too. The key
to hiring someone is find a professional. My pet sitter is the owner
her own pet care business. She has all the proper licensing and is
insured.
I met her and checked her references before she ever got a key. My
sitter is also registered with Pet Sitters International, which is how
I found her.
I definitely recommend only hiring someone who has or works for a
legitimate pet sitting or aquarium maintenance business. Make sure they
are insured no matter what and bonded if they have employees. Call
references and check with the Better Business Bureau for outstanding
complaints. Professional business practice also helped me to gain trust
in my sitter. She has a well designed website, letterhead, business
cards and a formal contract designed for all clients. We also had a one
on one consultation beforehand so she could meet my cat to see how he
would react to her. (Not that you would do this for fish... well some
people might.) She also knows animal CPR and can administer
medication... Hmmm. I wonder if she is fishy Heimlich certified... God
forbid a betta choke on a bloodworm.
anyway... I digress. My point is, with a little bit of legwork you can
usually find someone you can trust and who will turn out to be a real
asset.
