Usually, in my cichlid tanks, when i add another cichlid, assuming they
are similar in size, I take the tank decorations/plants/rocks, and pull
them out and here's the reason... Before you introduce a fish, the
current residents have claimed territory... one fish may 'own' a rock,
or a corner, and when you virtually take that away, it puts everyone on
an even playing field for territory. If you don't do that, the new guy
is only looking for a spot, and all the current ones' are taken...

if you introduce a new fish, try and 're'introduce them all in a sense.
if you take some stuff out, leave the fish in. they'll all huddle
together when you start yanking things out... add new fish and quickly
add some things back in. rearrange things a bit, push them from one
spot to another, then when you're done, turn out the light and wait for
15minutes. come back and turn light on and if all things are done
right (according to the way your fish would like it) they should have
settled down a little bit.

remember, this idea doesn't consider the types of fish you have. JDs
and Oscars are MORE tempermental than most fish... you may have to be
more creative... maybe adding a clay pot for the new fish to hide in
for a few days...
