I don't know what you can do to get them under control, but you may want to
set up another (small) tank to harvest the snails, then call your local LFS
for a possible trade in for something you really want. Even if you only get
store credit, you're still ahead of the game.

They look a little like mexican turbo snails if I let them get big enough,
but they are a mottled brown color.
