national atheist group and the Detroit Downtown Development Authority,
which pledged $734,570 in grants to three historic churches in a major
downtown face-lift in time for the 2006 Super Bowl.

I tend to agree with the DDDA. Nothing wrong with sprucing up the town.
The problem is, the Church doesn't pay any taxes, so this benefit is
basically a free ride emburdened by the tax payers. When the Church
starts being a part of the taxpaying community, then it deserves the
benefits thereof.
