Default Is it possible to set up a mini-ecosystem with reproducing predators and prey?

I was wondering if anything like what follows is even remotely possible in
a home aquarium: a system where there are reproducing predators and prey
(hopefully including fish in both categories) which balance out each other
in a miniature ecosystem. Is it possible for fish to hide from predators if
you have enough potted plants and hiding places? What about non-fish prey
that safely reproduce? How big of an aquarium would you need to seperate
the prey from the predators? If it's not possible, what current aquarium
technologies are holding it back? Tank size alone?
