When things like that shed their skin, I just leave
it in the tank to contribute to the live rock. When
small things die, I just leave them in, and the
worms and pods get a treat, and a lot of other
critters too. To tell if it is a dead crab, or just
a shed, smell it. If it does not smell bad, and it's
been in there for a few hours, it is just a shed.
