have spent so much time in the tank with other fish before these

Are you acclimating the new fish before you add them to the tank? You don't
just bring them home, float them awhile and dump them in do you? The TDS
may be the problem. The PH and hardness of the water from the Pet store and
your tank may be vastly different. I learned this the hard way. :*(
