I have always prefered to have snails even if they are small snails
and lotas of them in any fry tank as they helped clean up the mess
that fry tanks make as compared to other type tanks.....Clown loaches
will eradicate the snails, but so will a slice of zuchinni squash
floating in the water and netted out when all the snails accumulate on
it. May take a few days but its still a very effectived means of
elinminating a lot of snails. Of course you probbaly will be dealing
with egg masses on tank glass etc as well as inside the fitler so
arbitrarily getting rid of snails is not such a simple matter, and
will take time.
like you i don't want to get rid of all snails,i just need to keep there
numbers in check

Then its so much better to use a slice of zuchinni squash or a piece
of lettuce floatinmg in the tank and removed with snails on it. YOU
can control what you yourself harvests but have no real control over
what a fish may consume or kill. Just slice a pice of zuchinni squash
into silices about 1/4" thick, and place in the tank early evening,
before lights out. Next morning use a net to scoop out zuchinni slice
and rinse it off under runing water which wil wash off snails inthe
process.....You can toss it in the tank all day long too, but you wind
up feding the snails and therefore they may not be as good as a clean
up crew as they could be since they found easy food to get instead of
hunting for scraps as usual. The squash method works and works good. I
have heard some folks use sliced cucumbers too.
